 Early life of Arundhati Roy


Famous English language novelist Arundhati Roy was born on 24 November 1961 in Shillong. Her mother's name is Mary Roy and father's name is Rajib Roy. Her mother was from a Syrian Christian family from Kerala, while her father is a Bengali Hindu resident of Calcutta. When Arundhati was two years old, her parents separated from each other.  Later, she came to Kerala with her mother and brother, where she spent her childhood.

Roy was awarded the 1997 Booker Prize for her novel The God of Small Things.


In January 2006, she was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award, a national award from India's Academy of Letters, for her collection of essays on contemporary issues, The Algebra of Infinite Justice, but she declined to accept it "in protest against the Indian Government toeing the US line by 'violently and ruthlessly pursuing policies of brutalisation of industrial workers, increasing militarisation and economic neo-liberalisation'".

The Arundhati Roy case from thirteen years ago is reportedly being reopened, sparking renewed interest.


The matter was such that on October 28, 2010, Kashmiri activist Sushil Pandit had filed a complaint in this regard. The event was organized under the banner of ‘Azadi – The Only Way’ and was organized by the ‘Committee to Free All Political Prisoners (CRPP)’. In this there was talk of separating Kashmir from the rest of India. Arundhati Roy had said that Kashmir has never been an integral part of India. He also falsely claimed that Indian officials had accepted it in the United Nations.


Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vijay Kumar Saxena has approved prosecution against writer Arundhati Roy.

Arundhati Roy's experience spans many fields. First she studied architecture, then she became more interested in writing. She has also said in an interview, "My life is very strange. There is a lot of pressure and strangeness in it. I have no fixed destination. There is no one to mediate between me and the world." She is also deeply engaged in activism, advocating for social justice, environmental issues, and against global capitalism and government policies. Her boldness in addressing controversial issues has earned her both praise and criticism.
